Lakes Area Law Enforcement Employment Co-op is establishing an eligibility list for current and future law enforcement openings in the beautiful Iowa Great Lakes Area!
Successful applicants are eligible for employment by all agencies:
Arnolds Park, Emmetsburg, Estherville, Lake Park, Milford, Okoboji, Spencer, Spirit Lake Police Departments; Palo Alto, Osceola & Dickinson County Sheriff’s Offices.
At the time of application, candidates must meet State Requirements for Law Enforcement Employment. Currently certified ILEA applicants are allowed lateral transfer. Applicants without certification are required to pass P.O.S.T. & physical agility exams.

Essential Duties
The work in this class involves responsibility for the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, and the general enforcement of laws and assignments. Duties normally consist of routine patrol, preliminary investigation, and traffic regulation which may be performed in cruiser cars, on bicycles, or on foot. However, duties may also include those functions performed by the Detective Division. The work involves an element of personal danger and the employee must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies. Assignments may include work at headquarters on special tasks which call upon specialized abilities and knowledge. Work assignments are general and special instructions are received from a superior officer who revises work methods and results through reports, personal inspection and discussion.
- Patrol City streets, roads and public places, either on foot, by bicycle or in an automobile, either at large or in a designated area
- Check buildings for unlocked doors, break-ins and fires
- Direct traffic and enforce speed limits
- Enforce motor vehicle and parking regulations on streets and roads
- Investigate automobile and other accidents, interviewing witnesses, gathering information, locating and identifying hit-and-run vehicles, diagramming accident scenes, and making detailed reports
- Watch for and make investigations of wanted or missing persons
- Answer calls and complaints involving fire, robberies and other misdemeanors and felonies
- Enforce City Ordinances and State and Federal laws
- Ascertain all facts available at the scene of a crime or accident, getting statements of witnesses, gathering and processing evidence and preparing reports to be used in follow-up investigations and other detective section functions
- Issue citations, make arrests and take prisoners to jail
- Interview persons with complaints and inquiries, and attempt to make proper disposition or direct them to appropriate authorities
- Conduct tour groups and perform other youth bureau related duties
- Identify and solve community conflicts and problems; Assist in developing community relation programs
- Investigate cases of vandalism, thefts, breaking and entering, assaults, domestic disturbances, etc.
- Assist at airport, providing security at the boarding area
- Conduct follow-up investigations of criminal matters
- Assist citizens in public relations activities such as unlocking cars, animal control, helping the elderly, giving talks, etc.
- Testify in court
- Operate the radar unit
- Attend regular training classes in police methods
- Assist in parades, funerals and other functions
- May act as desk officer or firearms instructor
- Promotes public trust through positive interaction i.e. professionalism, courtesy, cooperation, communication and education
- Perform other duties as directed
Summary of Qualification Requirements
Some working knowledge of the street layout and population pattern of the City; some working knowledge of the common laws covering traffic and general behavior; ability to react quickly and calmly to emergency police situations; ability to develop skill in the use and care of firearms and other weapons; ability to drive an automobile safely and efficiently; dependable; ability to be firm but also courteous and tactful with the public; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions in accordance with departmental policies and procedures; ability to prepare concise and accurate reports. Personal characteristics should include: integrity and character, positive attitude, compassion, desire for continuous learning and self-improvement and ability to communicate effectively.
Additional Information
Effecting arrests, subduing resisting individuals, chasing fleeing subjects, climbing stairs or ladders, performing life-saving and rescue procedures and operating assigned equipment including firearms and vehicles. Also, exercising sound judgment and rational thinking under dangerous circ*mstances; evaluating various options and alternatives and choosing an appropriate and reasonable course of action; demonstrate intellectual capabilities during training and testing processes; work closely with others and work alone. Work requires exerting a negligible amount of force constantly; up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally to move objects. Must be able to perform physical tasks under stressful conditions.Vision of at least 20/100, correctable to 20/20 or as required by the State of Iowa Chapter 400; vision cannot be inhibited by color blindness or night blindness.
